Computers have long helped journalists in providing analytical tools to cope with large datasets. In recent years, however, computers are increasingly complementing—and even replacing—humans in performing journalistic tasks (e.g., selection, aggregation, production). In an attempt to describe this development, researchers have introduced concepts such as data journalism, data-driven journalism, computational journalism, algorithmic journalism, automated journalism, robot journalism, service journalism, and drone journalism. We categorize these concepts and compare them to journalism in the traditional sense. Furthermore, we describe how technological and social trends affect traditional processes and tasks and discuss potential implications for future research, journalism practice, and policy.
